Signs of Heat
As we move through Spring and into the early days of Summer, I am seeing plenty of signs of heat in the clinic.
It’s the dormant seed in us wiggling out of the ground and sprouting, stretching its arms and getting things flowing inside. With that and the warmer weather comes Heat. And with Heat comes a few pesky symptoms…
- dry lips, mouth, throat
- hot, flushed face
- hot hands and feet
- sinus congestion, hayfever
- restlessness, irritability
- hot sweaty nights
- difficulty falling asleep
- mouth ulcers
- constipation
Chinese medicine’s goal in maintaining good health focuses on balancing the body’s internal elements. One crucial aspect of this balance is the regulation of Heat within the body. Heat in our bodies can dry up our fluids and potentially increase our sensitivity to emotional triggers. This is the last thing we need as we finish up the year and prepare for a new one. However, in saying that, here’s a reminder that we don’t have to fit everything in before the year is over. It is ok to give yourself some ‘you’ time!
Lifestyle
It’s time to slow down a bit. Practicing mindful movements can help to reduce the the generation of internal Heat. It also increases mental clarity, enhances your balance, coordination and endurance, and assist with emotional regulation. So, why not try some gentle walking, yoga, meditation or tai chi to finish off the year.
Diet
- Food therapy to cool internal heat includes: watermelon, mint, cucumbers, stewed pears, chrysanthemum (all in moderation!) and leafy greens.
- Eat dinner earlier. Eating dinner a few hours before your bedtime routine and going for a gentle walk after will aids digestion and clear some heat before you settle into sleep.
