What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Single herbs are combined to create a formula specifically suited to each patient. As your condition changes and improves, so does the formula. It’s reviewed and adjusted throughout your treatment to support your recovery.
The most popular way of taking Chinese herbs is in granule form. Granules are easier to prepare and take than the traditional method of cooking raw herbs. They dissolve easily in a small amount of boiling water and are swallowed. The majority of herbs prescribed at the clinic are in granule form.

Other popular options include custom capsules, patent pills and tinctures. Pre-made formulas are usually not as potent as a personally tailored prescription, but they can be very convenient in some circumstances, for example when travelling, or used alongside your regular formula.
For an acute condition, a higher dose is usually prescribed for a short period. For chronic conditions, herbs may still provide relief relatively quickly, but a longer course of treatment is usually more appropriate for lasting results.
Some frequently asked questions…
Is Chinese herbal medicine safe, and can I take it with other medications?
Chinese herbal medicine is generally well tolerated when prescribed by a registered practitioner. Formulas usually combine multiple herbs, which keeps the dose of each individual herb low. Some people experience minor side effects such as mild digestive upset. Let your practitioner know and your formula can be adjusted.
Chinese herbs can interact with existing medications and supplements, so it’s important to tell your practitioner about everything you’re currently taking to reduce this risk.
Do the herbs taste awful?
Honestly? Some of it’s bitter. But if it tasted like a lolly, you’d probably be right to be suspicious. If taste is a concern, your practitioner can discuss whether custom capsules or an alternative form might suit you better.

Safety
Chinese herbal medicine is generally well tolerated, but like all medicines, reactions and interactions can occur. Tell your practitioner about all medications and supplements you’re currently taking, so the most appropriate formula can be prescribed and the risk of interactions reduced.
