If you’ve spent any time on TikTok or Instagram lately, you’ve probably seen ear seeds everywhere.
From influencers claiming they help sculpt the jawline and reduce facial puffiness to wellness enthusiasts using them for stress relief, ear seeds have quickly become one of the biggest trends in holistic health.
But while social media has made them popular, ear seeds have actually been used for thousands of years as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
So what exactly are they, do they really work, and should you book in for them?
Let’s dive in.
What Are Ear Seeds?
Ear seeds are tiny beads (traditionally made from the Vaccaria plant, although gold, silver and crystal versions are also common) that are placed on specific acupuncture points on the ear using small pieces of adhesive tape.
Unlike acupuncture needles, ear seeds remain in place for several days, allowing you to gently stimulate the points throughout the day by applying light pressure.
Think of them as giving your acupuncture treatment a little extra support between appointments.
How Do Ear Seeds Work?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the ear is considered a microsystem of the entire body.
Every part of the body has a corresponding point on the ear. By stimulating these points, we aim to encourage balance within the nervous system and support the body’s natural healing processes.
Modern research also suggests that stimulating areas of the ear may influence branches of the vagus nerve and other nerves connected to the brain, helping regulate stress responses and promote relaxation.
What Can They Help With?
While everyone’s treatment is individualised, ear seeds are commonly used alongside acupuncture to support:
- Stress and anxiety
- Sleep difficulties
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Headaches and migraines
- Jaw tension (TMJ)
- Digestive complaints
- Hormonal symptoms
- Menstrual discomfort
- Emotional wellbeing
- Cravings and appetite regulation
- Smoking cessation support
- Chronic pain
Because they stay on for several days, many people enjoy having something they can press whenever symptoms arise.
Can Ear Seeds Help Depuff the Face?
This is probably the biggest reason ear seeds have gone viral recently.
Some people notice their face appears less puffy after having ear seeds placed on specific points. This may be due to improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and reduced muscle tension.
However, it’s important to know that ear seeds aren’t a cosmetic treatment on their own.
If facial sculpting or reducing puffiness is your goal, the best results usually come when ear seeds are combined with a personalised acupuncture treatment that addresses the underlying causes—whether that’s stress, poor sleep, inflammation, fluid retention or muscle tension.
Do They Hurt?
Not at all.
You may feel slight pressure or tenderness when the point is pressed, but most people quickly forget they’re even wearing them.
They’re discreet enough to wear to work, the gym or out to dinner.
How Long Do They Stay On?
Most ear seeds stay in place for around 3–5 days, although some people may keep them on for up to a week if they’re still well adhered.
You’ll be shown how often to gently press them to get the most benefit.
If they become uncomfortable, itchy or begin to lift, they can simply be removed.
Are They Enough on Their Own?
This is one of the most common questions we receive.
While ear seeds can certainly provide ongoing support, they’re generally most effective when used alongside acupuncture.
Acupuncture allows us to treat the underlying pattern affecting your health, while the ear seeds continue stimulating key points between treatments.
That’s why we include ear seeds at the end of many acupuncture sessions, they help reinforce the treatment and extend its effects.
Who Should Avoid Them?
Ear seeds are suitable for most people.
However, they may not be appropriate if you:
- Have a skin allergy to adhesives
- Have eczema, infections or broken skin on the ear
- Have significant irritation where the seeds would be placed
Your practitioner will always assess whether they’re suitable for you.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
At your acupuncture appointment, we’ll discuss your symptoms, health history and treatment goals.
After your acupuncture treatment, we may apply ear seeds to carefully selected points based on your individual presentation.
We’ll show you how to gently stimulate them at home over the following few days before removing them.
Every treatment is tailored specifically to you, there’s no one-size-fits-all ear seed protocol.
